Worship and Study for Lent 2012

During the holy season of Lent, building up to the great festival of Easter, the church traditionally offers opportunities for extra worship, prayer and teaching to prepare for Holy Week and Easter itself. In the United Benefice, and in the wider church around us, there is much to occupy us.

On Sunday evenings at St Faith's beginning on February 26th and running through to March 25th, we will be offering a series of Devotional Addresses, reflecting on aspects of Christian living, given by students of the Anglican College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, with whom we have close connections. These devotional addresses (set in the context of a simple evening service concluding with Benediction) will help us to explore our Christian discipleship and the nature of the God we worship. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, marked at St Mary's by a eucharist with hymns at 10.30 am. and at St Faith's by the 8.00 pm Solemn Eucharist and imposition of ashes
- followed by a baked bean supper!

In addition to the regular services at our two churches, there are additional acts of worship. On Wednesdays at St Mary's, beginning on February 29th and running through to March 21st,
the usual 10.30 pm Eucharist will include a meditation on the Way of the Cross. And on Fridays at St Faith's at 6.30 pm there will be a service of the Stations of the Cross and Holy Eucharist, running though to March 25th.

Our churches are active members of Churches Together in Waterloo, working with other Anglican churches, as well as Roman Catholic and Nonconformist representatives.
They have organised a series of Lenten Groups, meeting in members' houses on weekdays and evenings, for a group study course entitled 'Handing on the Torch: Sacred Words for a Secular World'.
